Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso announced on February 9 the opening of applications for the fiscal year 2024 capital funding.
Each year, the New York City Charter allows each of the city’s five borough presidents to allocate capital funding to qualified projects as part of each year’s city budget process — including money to improve parks, streets, affordable housing projects, cultural institutions, hospitals, schools , and other non-profit organizations.
“We’ve got to get the word out that funding is available to our city agencies, public schools, nonprofits, and cultural institutions who have exciting projects in mind to benefit Brooklynites. The applications we receive help us understand Brooklyn’s priorities and needs,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
The borough president made history last year, when he chose to allocate the entirety of the 2023 capital funding budget — $43 million in total — to Brooklyn’s three public hospitals to improve maternal healthcare in the borough.
This historic decision marked the very first time that a borough president had ever been chosen to allocate the entirety of the capital funding budget to one cause and within one sector.
During his state of the borough speech in January, Reynoso told his constituents that for this fiscal year, he will allocate a portion of the capital funding budget towards supporting Brooklyn’s many nonprofit organizations – particularly by purchasing permanent spaces for the organizations.
“Last year, we made history-making investments in our public hospitals to address the maternal mortality crisis in our borough, and this year, we’re gearing up to spread that love and support all across Brooklyn,” said the borough president in his speech in January. “If you or anyone you know has a project that might be eligible for capital or discretionary funding, now is the time to see what the Office of the Borough President can do for you.”
The deadline for applications for funding from the borough president (including those also requesting funding from City Council and/or the New York Department of Cultural Affairs) is February 23, 2023 by 5 pm with the Cultural Affairs application found here. The deadline for applications solely for funding from City Council and/or Cultural Affairs is March 23, 2023 by 5 pm
