It isn’t lavishly appointed, but this Cypress Hills brick house has charm potential with some early 20th century details on the interior, two floor-through units, and a garage. It also comes under the million dollar mark.
Historic maps and newspaper accounts appear to show the bow-front house and its adjacent twin at the corner of Pine Street in place by 1911. Built as a two-family dwelling, 256 Etna Street has a one-bedroom unit on the first floor, a three-bedroom unit on the second floor, and a home office and laundry in the basement. The semi-detached house has exposures on three sides, which means the bedrooms, placed in the middle of both units, all have windows.
Both units have living rooms with street-facing bays. While the first-floor space has the only decorative mantel in the house, both have wall moldings, picture rails, and wood floors. Both dining rooms have sections of the expected period plate shelves in place.
The kitchen in the first-floor unit got a makeover with exposed beams and brick walls, while the small upstairs kitchen has a pass-through to the dining room and a tin ceiling.
Only one bedroom is shown and that is the one in the first-floor unit. Like originally two bedrooms, it is generously sized and has original built-ins with drawers and upper cabinets, wood floors, and a ceiling fan.
Each unit has one full bath next to the kitchen, although only one is shown. While it could use a style tweak, it appears in good repair.
The rear yard has a concrete pad, a portion of which is covered with a raised wood deck. There are planting beds around the perimeter and possibilities for someone with a green thumb. A gated driveway leads to the garage at the side of the house.
The house hasn’t been on the market since the late 1960s. Listed by Catherine E. Witherwax and Mary Kay Seery of Brown Harris Stevens, the townhouse is priced at $915,000. What do you think?
