Described as neo-Classical in an early brochure and a Brooklyn Daily Eagle article when it debuted in 1937, the red brick building at 230 Park Place designed by architect Philip Birnbaum has some Art Deco touches. The latter includes arrow-like details along vertical banks of windows and the flat, rectangular door surround at the building’s front entrance.
Now an 82-unit co-op, it was built as a rental with “dropped living rooms, steel casement windows, dining balconies, all-electric kitchens, dressing rooms, stall showers and roomy closets,” according to the brochure. The sunken living room and roomy closets are still evidenced in No. 5N.
White plaster walls, oak parquet floors, original moldings, and simple white fixtures and finishes in the kitchen and bathroom give the apartment a modern yet classic feel. It opens into a large foyer with three closets.
Down a step is the long living room with plenty of room for books; a photo shows Vitsoe shelving with a built-in desk along a short wall.
A dining area outside the kitchen has a built-in banquette with storage. The still-electric kitchen has minimalist white cabinetry, square white tile backsplash, slate-like floor tiles and a dishwasher.
A dressing room that could double as a home office has two more closets. The bedroom is nearly as big as the living room and has a corner window.
The mostly white bathroom has an Art Deco tub with faceted corner, penny tile floor, subway tile wall and separate shower with glass door.
The building has a full-time doorman, live-in super, shared laundry, additional storage and a bike room. Monthly maintenance is $1,511 and a monthly assessment of $46.80 runs through the end of the year. Listed by Nick Gavin of Compass, the unit is asking $995,000. What do you think?
